Election Night Hangover

Today’s headline about Obama’s relection is no surprise.  Sometimes polls are wrong, but this time they were dead on…close race, Obama wins.

Many people leading up to last night’s race warned of doomsday if Obama won.  But I don’t personally believe America’s future has much to do with who sits in the oval office…it has to do with people’s hearts.  If America is facing a doomsday, I think it is because Americans do not wholeheartedly turn toward Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, or chose to live for the one and only true and living God.

When I think of faith in America today, the image of the “Christ the Redeemer” statue on the hilltop overlooking Rio de Janeiro comes to mind.  We pay homage to the idea of God, but He plays no real role in our lives as a nation of individuals.

That is not what God intended in the Garden of Eden.  He desired a vibrant relationship with humans, and He has given Christians the awesome privilege of participating with Him in His work here on earth to restore that relationship.  Unfortunately, we Christians are a lot better at sounding the warning bell than we are at loving people into God’s kingdom.

Do you want to see America strong again?  Do you want to see a stable America, a land admired for its leadership and vision?  It doesn’t start with a vote…or end in a theocratic state (that can suffer human corruption).  It will happen when Christians from every corner of the nation commit to take these words of Jesus to heart and live them out in their daily lives:

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your
mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love
your neighbor as yourself.”  (Matthew 22:37-39)
